Urban Education Days
The Urban Education day is designed to give experiencial learning opportunities to youth and adults interested in issues of poverty and urban life.
In a typical Urban Education Day:
- Urban Education begins with a tour of DenUM's facilities and an overview of the range of people DenUM serves each day.
- Participants adopt family profiles to experience "poverty simulation" through DenUM's Game of Life.
- A homeless or formerly homeless speaker relates his or her experience, allowing time for every question you never thought you'd get to ask.
- Activities and discussion connect local demographics to participants' own experiences and attitudes about poverty.
- A walking tour of services in downtown Denver allows groups to imagine the challenges faced by low-income people in a changing urban area.
This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in urban life and poverty. The cost is $10 per person (includes lunch) and the experience can be adapted to fit varying interests and time committments (2-6 hours). Group size can vary from 5 to 30 people. Please contact Caroline, Urban Education Coordinator, for available dates.
